Environmental Charter High School To Have Commencement Address Delivered By U.S. Secretary Of Labor Hilda L. Solis

(Los Angeles, CA. June 18, 2010) The Environmental Charter HS (ECHS) was a top finalist in the “Race to the Top” Commencement Challenge, launched in late February 2010 by the White House.  ECHS was one of over 1,000 applicants for the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge narrowed down by the White House to six high school finalists nationally.   

The Environmental Charter HS (www.echsonline.org) was judged based on the schools’ performance, four essay questions and supplemental data. ECHS was selected as a finalist for their dedication to academic excellence and for showing how they are helping prepare students to graduate college and career ready.  The ECHS students met the President Obama’s goal of having the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020 and won the opportunity for a member of the President’s cabinet U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis to deliver this year’s commencement speech to the 2010 graduating class of 100 college bound student.

Environmental Charter High School’s mission is to inspire students to discover their own sense of purpose, to equip all students with the knowledge and skills to graduate from college, and to empower them to become quality stewards of their community and world.  Since receiving its California Charter in 2000, ECHS has become an award-winning institution delivering dramatically improved academic results and enriching the lives of hundreds of young people of whom nearly 80% are financially disadvantaged.
