Expansion With The Opening of Environmental Charter Middle School
ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER SCHOOLS ANNOUNCES
EXPANSION WITH THE OPENING OF
ENVIRONMENTAL CHARTER MIDDLE SCHOOL
Environmental Charter Middle School to open
for the 2010 – 2011 school year in Inglewood, CA
Los Angeles, CA (July 29, 2010) The award winning Environmental Charter Schools (ECS) (www.echsonline.org) has announced the expansion of the Environmental Charter High School with the opening of Environmental Charter Middle School (ECMS) for the 2010 – 2011 school year. Located at Concordia Church – 3600 West Imperial Highway in Inglewood, CA., ECMS will welcome its first class of 6th graders in Fall 2010. 7th grade will be added in Fall 2011 and 8th grade in Fall of 2012.
ECMS will open its doors in September 2010 to 100 6th grade students; Enrollment is open to all students regardless of district boundaries. The school will offer students a small, caring school environment, 25-30 children per classroom, which supports students’ transition from elementary school and prepares them for high school success. The educational program is designed to help students develop the academic skills, knowledge and attitudes needed to succeed in a college preparatory high school and to be effective stewards of their community. ECMS will offer field trips and project-based learning that connect academics to real world tasks, an environmental and arts-integrated curriculum, and all students’ will be required to wear uniforms.
Environmental Charter Middle School’s theme for the 6th graders is “Survival”. In California, 6th graders study ancient civilizations and earth sciences. So the ECMS students will study the early agricultural river civilizations, working in the garden and exploring challenges of sustainable food production. They will build aquaponic systems, a symbiotic cultivation of plants and aquatic animals in a re-circulating environment, demonstrating the interconnectedness of living systems.
Environmental Charter Schools’ mission is to inspire students to discover their own sense of purpose, to equip all students with the knowledge and skills to graduate from college, and to empower them to become quality stewards of their community and world. Since receiving its California Charter in 2000, ECHS has become an award-winning institution delivering dramatically improved academic results and enriching the lives of hundreds of young people of whom nearly 80% are financially disadvantaged.
On Saturday , August 7th , 2010 from 9:00am – 3:00pm the Environmental Charter Middle School incoming 6th graders and their families, in partnership with From Lot to Spot (www.fromlottospot.org), will be volunteering for community service to beautify the new ECMS campus planting trees (a project that was started with the help of Los Angeles Conservation Corps (www.lacorps.org)), painting and preparing the school for the upcoming school year.
Interested local families are encouraged to visit the campus or check out the school’s website to find more information about registration - http://www.echsonline.org/admission.cfm/id/apply-to-environmental-charter-middle-school.
