Fresh from getting word that President Barack Obama could speak at graduation ceremonies, officials at Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale have received another piece of good news.
A proposal filed by the school's operator to open a middle school in Gardena was approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Office of Education.
The decision opens the door for Environmental Charter Schools to begin classes at the new campus in September. Environmental Charter Middle School, which will be tuition-free and open to the public, will start with an enrollment of 100 sixth-grade students, school officials said. Seventh- and eighth-grade classes will be added during the next two years.
"We're just very pleased and excited to be able to open a `green' charter school that promotes hands-on learning opportunities, problem-solving opportunities and a `greener' curriculum in Gardena," said Alison Suffet-Diaz, founder and executive director of Environmental Charter Schools.
